The University of Chicago's Combined Geriatric Medicine and Hospice/Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program offers a comprehensive, interdisciplinary training experience designed to cultivate leaders in both specialties. This integrated 24-month program combines rigorous clinical training with dedicated time for scholarly work preparing fellows to address the complex needs of aging populations and those with serious illnesses.​

Program Overview

Fellows in this program engage in 24 months of combined clinical training in geriatrics and palliative medicine. This structure ensures a well-rounded educational experience that includes:​

  • Clinical Rotations:Fellows provide primary and consultative care across various settings, focusing on frailty, multiple co-morbid conditions, dementia, psychiatric illnesses, and end-of-life care. ​
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Training emphasizes a multidisciplinary approach, involving collaboration with professionals from social work, nursing, pharmacy, chaplaincy, and medical specialties. ​
  • Scholarship Opportunities:The program includes dedicated time to work on mentored projects in research, quality improvement, and medical education, allowing fellows to contribute to advancements in geriatrics and palliative care.​
