Dr. William Parker, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Section of Pulmonary/Critical Care is the recipient of the 2023-2024 John D. Arnold, MD Mentor Award. This award is in recognition of Dr. Parker’s sustained excellence in mentoring a Pritzker medical student at the Annual Scientific Session. He will be recognized with the award during the Session’s Award Ceremony on May 15, 2024.

Dr. Parker is a medical ethicist and health services researcher who studies the allocation of scarce medical resources. He is specifically interested in absolute scarcity problems, where demand greatly exceeds supply, and healthcare systems cannot avoid rationing. He applies advanced empirical methods to evaluate and design allocation systems according to the underlying ethical principles. His current projects focus on deceased donor organ allocation, critical care/ventilator rationing under crisis standards of care, and COVID-19 vaccine allocation.
