It is our pleasure to welcome you to the Fellowship Program of the Section of Adult and Pediatric Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism at the University of Chicago!
Our two-year ACGME-accredited program offers outstanding clinical training, in-depth research experiences, and distinguished faculty to teach and mentor you along the way. Our program strives to train the best endocrinologists in the country regardless of eventual career plans. We offer 2 adult positions each year through the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). We also offer a combined Adult-Pediatrics Endocrinology fellowship.
The strengths of our program include:
Rich Endocrine History
The University of Chicago has an extensive history of key discoveries in Endocrine science and pathology. Among these include the identification of the Islets of Langerhans (Dr. Robert R. Bensley), key discoveries in the role of hormones in cancer (Dr. Charles Huggins), the discovery of pro-insulin (Dr. Donald Steiner), discoveries in thyroid hormone synthesis (Dr. Leslie DeGroot), the discovery of the resistance to thyroid hormone syndrome (aka Refetoff Syndrome, Dr. Samuel Refetoff), and the discovery of the genes causing Maturity Onset Diabetes of Youth (MODY; Dr. Graeme Bell).
Sub-specialty Clinics with Global Leaders in Endocrinology
• Sub-specialty clinics in Diabetes, Thyroid, Bone, Diabetes in Pregnancy, Adrenal/Pituitary and Hypertension, among others, provide a diverse education through the full spectrum of Endocrinology
• Our faculty include multiple NIH grant recipients, a former President of the American Diabetes Association, and authors of clinical guidelines in diabetes and thyroid disease.
Research Opportunities
• Whether you are interested in clinical or basic science research, there are many opportunities to participate in research. Our fellows commonly present research at national meetings and publish scholarly papers.
Generous Support
• Through the hospital, each fellow receives a $9000 academic stipend per year to be used at their discretion for academic and research expenses. The section also supports the fellows in attending educational opportunities, such as Endocrine University.
