- Opioid Use Disorder Consult Service
Faculty in the Section of General Internal Medicine, several of whom are dually boarded in Addiction Medicine, are increasingly focused on substance use disorder (SUD) care, education, and research. Outpatient clinicians integrate treatment for alcohol, opioid, and tobacco use into comprehensive primary care. The section also launched UCMC’s inpatient Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) Consult Service in 2019, managing hospitalized patients across the hospital with OUD, including treatment of withdrawal and initiation of long-term medication therapies, and linking to community-based care after discharge care. Trainees from across UChicago rotate on the service, which has generated multiple quality improvement, educational, and research projects leading to workshops, presentations, and publications.
