Clinical and Research Conferences The Section of Pulmonary and
Critical Care Medicine is particularly proud of the quality and diversity of the teaching experience.
Several important conferences are offered
as part of the teaching program. Among the most valued is the Pulmonary
and Critical Care Morning Report, a daily 30 minute case
based conference that presents three new patients drawn from the intensive
care units, consult services and outpatient clinics, plus follow-up
from previous days. The conference is attended by faculty, fellows,
residents and students, with a goal of developing a formalized approach
to clinical problem solving.
The core curriculum is divided into a year-long weekly comprehensive
clinical Pulmonology Lecture Series, and a Critical
Care Lecture Series. The Pulmonology Lecture Series
consists of weekly lectures covering pulmonary pathophysiology, pulmonary
disease states, diagnostic imaging and incorporates a monthly journal
club.
The Critical Care Lecture Series is offered four
days a week in the Medical Intense Care Unit. This conference reviews
an extensive syllabus in the pathophysiology of critical illness.
At first taught by the faculty, fellows are expected later in their
training to take on the challenge of teaching this syllabus to the
medicine residents and students.
Additional conferences are offered on a weekly basis. A Research
in Progress Conference highlights the work of clinical and
post-doctoral fellows, as well as junior faculty. This conference
provides research fellows with valuable feedback on their work and
serves as an introduction to the principles of cell and molecular
biology, physiology, and clinical research. A Clinical Pulmonary
/ Critical Care Case Conference is organized and run by the
fellows, and spotlights one particularly interesting case with a thorough,
critical review of the medical literature. A weekly Chest
Radiology Conference reviews interesting cases and is attended
by both the pulmonary and chest radiology services. A Pulmonary
Pathology Conference is held weekly during the summer months,
providing a comprehensive review of pulmonary pathology to incoming
fellows, and then continues monthly as a case based conference for
the remainder of the year. Research faculty provide seminars and a
Research Journal Club through their laboratory programs. |
