Department of Medicine


The fellowship training programs in the Section of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine seeks from among eligible applications those candidates who desire a career in academic medicine as scholars, investigators, and teachers. Considered in the selection process are aptitude, academic credentials, communication and interpersonal skills, and desire to pursue an academic career. The fellowship programs value diversity and strongly encourages applicants from a wide variety of backgrounds.

Applicants must be eligible for certification in Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine and must be licensed by the State of Illinois at the time they begin their fellowship. Applicants to the clinical programs must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States, or citizens of Canada. Applicants holding an H-1 or J-1 visa cannot be considered (due to the requirements of our research training program) unless they can provide their own financial support. The Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship Program participates in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Applications to our fellowship should be made to the ERAS at their website. We do not consider applications outside of the ERAS. Your application and 3 letters of support must be received (via ERAS) by February 1st to allow time for review. Early application submission is encouraged to allow adequate time for scheduling interviews. After we receive your completed application including three supporting letters from the ERAS, your file will be reviewed and you will be notified regarding the advisability of an interview.

The Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship Program participates in the Medical Specialties Matching Program of the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). Applicants should register with the NRMP at their website.

Applicants invited to an interview spend the day with our Section faculty and current fellows. Applicants meet with several members of the Fellowship Selection Committee, enjoy lunch and a tour of our clinical and research facilities, and sit in on Pulmonary and Critical Care Morning Report and the Research in Progress type conference given by senior faculty.
