Welcome to The University of Chicago Section of Nephrology website.
Our Section is comprised of twenty-three faculty members, seven Ph.D.
scientists, and eight postdoctoral fellows in training. U.S News and
World Report has consistently recognized us as one of the top nephrology
programs in the country. Our clinical practice is varied and includes
activities in end-stage renal disease, renal transplantation, acute
renal failure, kidney stones, diabetic nephropathy, and immunological
renal diseases.
We maintain three hemodialysis centers in the Hyde Park vicinity
and a home dialysis program operating out of the hospital. Our renal
transplant program is very active, and provides a variety of options
for renal transplantation. The Section, particularly in the areas
of end-stage renal disease, transplantation and kidney stones, carries
out a diversity of clinical research. Like our clinical activities,
our basic science research is also diverse, and includes investigations
into acute renal failure, lupus nephritis, epithelial cell transport
and gene expression. In the current year, our research faculty have
received nearly $2.5 million in federal research grants. Over the
years we have trained an elite group of nephrologists, and presently
offer various training options for fellows interested in academic
careers, including positions on the Section’s NIH training grant
and NIH Clinical Research Training Program. The pages herein will
provide greater detail on each of these topics.
