The Fellowship Program in Nephrology is based entirely at The University of Chicago Medical Center, which includes Mitchell Hospital, Billings Hospital, Chicago Lying-in Hospital, Children’s Hospital, and the Duchossois Center for Advanced Medicine. The Section of Nephrology operates the Woodlawn and Lake Park Chronic Hemodialysis Units, located in Hyde Park, the Stony Island Dialysis Unit at 8725 S. Stony Island Avenue, the Peritoneal Dialysis Unit and Acute Hemodialysis Unit, located within the Medical Center. The Section operates an internationally renowned Kidney Stone Program and the Department of Pathology provides st ate-of-the-art
techniques for the analysis of renal and bone biopsies.
The first year of fellowship is divided among the renal consultation service, the inpatient and outpatient dialysis service, and the kidney transplantation service. Fellows also follow a group of chronic hemodialysis patients in the second year of the training program. Clinics Fellows attend one half-day clinic a week, evaluating patients with chronic renal failure, hypertension, kidney stones, glomerulonephritis, renal bone disease and renal transplantation. In addition, fellows see patients in the renal transplant and donor evaluation clinics while on the Transplant Nephrology inpatient service. After the first year, fellows also have the opportunity to see patients in the kidney stone clinic. |
