The Fellowship Program Director, Dr. Jean-Luc Benoit, is recognized as an outstanding clinician and educator, and a graduate of the combined University of Illinois/University of Chicago fellowship program and a faculty member at The University of Chicago for the past 10 years. In July 2004, the ACGME approved the Section of Infectious Diseases and Geographical Medicine recently for its own independent fellowship program which accepts applications for two fellowship positions annually.

Minimum requirements for acceptance into the training program include:

• M.D. or equivalent degree
• Completion of an ACGME-accredited internal medicine residency program.
• U.S citizenship, Canadian Citizenship, or permanent resident status in the U.S.
• Immigrant visa or an exchange visa.  H-1B and similar visas not accepted.
• Certification by USMLE/FLEX for international medical school graduates.

The Fellowship Training Program requires 12 months of intensive clinical training, with 10 months of inpatient consultation in the first year and 2 additional months in the second year. The fellowship can be extended for individuals who desire further training in research, with support for the trainee through the research mentor.

All trainees will be matched for a clinical fellowship accredited for 2 years, with the decision on extending research training to be made on an individual basis during the period of training.
