Department of Medicine

We are delighted in your interest in the University of Chicago Geriatrics Fellowship Training Program. Our fellowship program is one of the most highly regarded and innovative programs in the country. We offer a unique combination of an extremely high level, rigorous academic atmosphere with rich and diverse clinical experience. Our Geriatrics program ranked 24th in the nation, according to the U.S. News and World Report (July 2007) annual report on the nation’s best hospitals. Our fellows are drawn from the best Internal Medicine and Family Practice training programs in North America. We receive in excess of 150 applications annually and interview about 10 residents for 2-3 available first year slots. Our graduates have become faculty of outstanding medical schools as clinical-scholars and clinician-educators across the country.

We offer both one and two year fellowships. The one-year program emphasizes mastery of clinical skills in Geriatric Medicine in a variety of settings as outlined in the following pages. Fellows who are enrolled in our two-year program begin to develop a research project during their first year of fellowship under the guidance of a Geriatrics mentor that is carried out during the second year. Fellows also enroll in classes in quantitative analysis such as Epidemiology, Statistics and Research Methodologies to further prepare them to become clinical investigators.

We also offer a unique opportunity in our combined geriatrics and oncology fellowship. This program combines training in our nationally renowned oncology program with geriatrics so that fellows develop a unique skill set becoming expert and board eligible in both disciplines. The combined fellowship program has been very successful in attracting gifted fellows and giving them an integrated experience in both disciplines so that they become extremely qualified in caring for older patients with cancer as well as furthering the knowledge in this important are through research.

The following description will provide you an opportunity to learn about the Geriatrics and Combined Geriatric Oncology Fellowship Training Program at the University of Chicago: a program that offers rich, invaluable experiences for physicians to learn about care of the older patients in variety of settings as well as to develop a career in academic medicine that is tailored to their diverse interests. Our goal is to continue to train the next generation of leaders in Geriatric Medicine.

Sincerely,
