The Section of Geriatrics provides outstanding
clinical care for older patients affected by an enormous variety of
medical problems, in a number of settings, and often by bringing to
bear the expertise of a team of professionals with advanced training
in geriatrics and gerontology. It is common for us to see and help
older patients with multiple medical problems associated with or complicated
by the effects of aging and challenging psychosocial situations –
patients who have often been frustrated by a health care system that
is not designed to provide attentive, sensitive, and comprehensive
care for older people with these kinds of conditions. The average
age of the patients seen in our clinics is about 80. By one established
measure, ou r
patients include twice the number of people who are physically frail
compared to national averages of medical practices. Faculty and staff
in Geriatrics cover the following range of modes of care for older
adults:
- Comprehensive primary care
- Consultative geriatric assessment
- Geriatric specialty clinics
- Sub-acute and long-term care at facilities nearby our two off-site
clinics
- Inpatient care at the U of C Hospitals, both on the general medicine
ward and on any of the medical, surgical, or psychiatric services
at the request of the treating physician, patient, or family.
In order to provide comprehensive, state of the art care for the
most challenging clinical problems, the Section of Geriatrics offers
a number of specialty clinics staffed by professionals who not only
have further geriatrics training, but also additional training in
or a passion for treating patients with specific geriatric syndromes
or conditions. Our Geriatric Specialty Clinics include:
Full-time advance practice nurses and social workers are part of
the on-site teams at both or our practices and experts in psychiatry,
neurology, ophthalmology, rheumatology, audiology, and nutrition practice
alongside the geriatrics group. Outpatient rehabilitation and dentistry
are even available within the same building as our Windermere Senior
Health Center. Our approach allows us to provide state of the art
care to the most complex and frail patients, including patients in
their 80s, 90s, or even over age 100. |
