The Section of Gastroenterology provides
outstanding care for a wide range of clinical problems focusing on
disorders rel ated
to the digestive system. These conditions may involve the liver, stomach,
colon (intestine), biliary tract, gallbladder and bowel. All of our
physicians are specialists in gastroenterology and have expertise
in diagnosing and treating a broad range of diseases, from inflammatory
bowel disease, to gallstones, to nutritional disorders, to cancer
of the stomach, liver or related organs. Our program is the top-ranked
gastroenterology program in Illinois and ranks sixth in the nation,
according to U.S.News & World Report (July, 2006).
The Gastroenterology outpatient practice provides patients with the
opportunity to select from more than 20 highly qualified specialists.
Our physicians work closely with nurses, clinical staff and other
sub specialists and surgeons to provide coordinated care for their
patients. Physicians conduct more than 13,000 patient visits per year
in the outpatient practice. We are recognized as an international
leader in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. Our gastroenterologists
are experts in the treatment of bleeding in the digestive tract, constipation,
diarrhea, esophageal reflux, gallstones, hemorrhoids, irritable bowel
syndrome, swallowing disorders and ulcers to name a few. Our physicians
also provide comprehensive management of liver disorders including
treatments that are not yet widely available. Comprehensive services
are also offered in nutritional care for people who suffer from severe
obesity and other nutritional problems.
The Gastroenterology section operates a state of the art endoscopic
procedure unit t hat
performs about 14,000 endoscopic procedures annually. The procedure
unit offers a full array of diagnostic tests to detect digestive and
liver problems. These include: colonscopy, ERCP, flexible sigmoidoscopy,
interventional endoscopy, liver biopsy, upper endoscopy. In addition
our physicians are making advances in less invasive procedures such
interventional endoscopy and endoscopic ultrasound.
