Department of Medicine

The training program in Endocrinology and Metabolism at The University of Chicago provides advanced training for qualified applicants in a broad area of hormone and metabolic research. Funded in large part by the National Institutes of Health through an Endocrinology Training grant, the program provides physician scientists with an integrated training in basic and clinical endocrine research preparing them for academic research careers. The enormous expansion of knowledge of the molecular basis of endocrinology and endocrine related diseases in the past ten years has made it imperative for physician-scientists to develop expertise in the techniques of clinical and basic biomedical research to allow them to translate findings from the research laboratory to the diagnosis and treatment of patients with endocrine disorders.

Through interactions with members of the endocrinology section and other investigators within The University of Chicago, the trainee will be provided with a broad and in-depth experience in both clinical and investigative endocrinology. Although the bulk of the clinical training is in adult outpatient clinics, the fellow will also participate in the care of patients in both pediatric and reproductive endocrinology. In addition to patient exposure, the trainees receive and attend weekly lecture series on recent developments in endocrinology research presented by national and international authorities in the area.

A unique aspect of the training program at The University of Chicago is the emphasis on continued clinical exposure throughout the duration of the fellowship. Thus, the trainee will begin a 24 month clinical training and a 12 months of research experience from the beginning of the program which will continue for 3 years. Two tracks, basic and clinical sciences, are available to the prospective fellow with an emphasis on maximum flexibility in the fellowship tailoring the training experiences to the career goals of the trainee.

Minimum requirements for admission to our fellowship program are:

  • M.D. or equivalent degree
  • Successful completion of an approved residency in internal medicine, pediatrics or surgery
  • U.S. citizenship, permanent residency, or hold a J1 visa (H1-B visa holders who are highly qualified applicants with previous research experience may be considered.)
