One of the highlights of the training program in Endocrinology and
Metabolism is the emphasis of continued clinical exposure throughout
the duration of the fellowship. The program is structured to meet
the requirement for training of competent clinical specialists in
endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism over the period of two years.
Although the bulk of the clinical training is in adult outpatient
clinics, the fellow will also participate in the care of patients
in both pediatric and reproductive endocrinology as well as the following
rotations:
- Endocrinology Diagnostic Laboratory
- Ophthalmology Clinic
- Thyroid Ultrasound
- Bone Densitometry
- Thyroid Cytology and Fine Needle Aspiration
- Pituitary Clinic
- Obstetrics/Gynecology Infertility Clinic
- Lipid Clinic
- Endocrinology Rounds
- Endocrinology Attending Clinic
- Endocrinology Continuity Clinic
- Endocrinology Consults
- Pediatrics Endocrine Clinic
Relation to the Department of Medicine
The Endocrinology and Metabolism training program is integrated
into the three years of training of residents in the Department of
Medicine. Specifically, Medicine interns and residents rotate in the
Outpatient Endocrinology Clinics as part of their Ambulatory Care
block rotations. In addition residents may rotate for one month on
the Endocrinology Consultation service during their senior year. Finally,
Medicine residents have elective time during their senior year during
which they may pursue in-depth study of a specific area within Endocrinology
under the supervision of a faculty member.
Residents in internal medicine interact also with Endocrinology
fellows when they request an Endocrinology consult. In this setting,
the resident and fellow interact personally in the diagnostic and
therapeutic plan, in writing orders and in the preparation of Medicine
Grand Rounds presentations. |
