medical institution of national and international renown with a mission
of excellence in research, education, clinical care. The purpose of
the Cardiology Training Program, under the direction of Dr. Roberto M. Lang, is to educate medical scientists, teachers
and clinicians of distinction in the context of this mission, while
at the same time providing indispensable clinical service of the highest
quality. This program, since its inception 1986 has been highly successful
in its mission. The Cardiology Fellowship program is specifically
designed to provide excellence in Cardiology education, including
advanced training in clinical cardiology, clinical research, and basic
research. The program is founded upon the principle that training
should be tailored to the needs of each fellow. The program currently
encompasses three years, with an optional additional year(s) of training
in clinical cardiology or cardiovascular research. A minimum of two
years is devoted to clinical training during which fellows participate
in a formal rotation schedule designed to instruct them in all areas
of general and invasive Cardiology. The third year of the program
is tailored to the career goals of the individual fellows. Fellows
committed to basic research can be provided with a full year of protected
research time. Those fellows interested in academic careers in clinical
Cardiology can obtain significant clinical research experience during
this year. Fellows committed to full-time practice of Cardiology structure
a program focusing on advanced training in clinical Cardiology. In
order to obtain additional specialized clinical training some Fellows
complete a fourth/fifth year in a variety of cardiac subspecialties
or basic research. Many of the Cardiology Fellows trained at The University
of Chicago enter academic medicine. A significant number of Fellows
also enter successful Cardiology practices.
