ACGME Fellowship Program - Clinical Training

Physicians

One of the highlights of the training program in Endocrinology and Metabolism is the emphasis of continued clinical exposure throughout the duration of the fellowship. Although the bulk of clinical training is in adult outpatient clinics, fellows also participate in the care of patients in both pediatric, and reproductive endocrinology, as well as the following rotations:

  • Endocrinology Diagnostic Laboratory
  • Ophthalmology Clinic
  • Thyroid Ultrasound
  • Bone Densitometry
  • Thyroid Cytology and Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA)
  • Pituitary Clinic
  • Obstetrics/Gynecology Infertility Clinic
  • Lipid Clinic
  • Endocrinology Rounds

Clinical responsibilities during the fellowship training:

Clinical activities include Inpatient Consult Service and Outpatient Clinics. One outpatient clinic session is 1/2 day per week. Whenever possible, two ½-day clinics are combined into a full day to increase efficiency of patient care and allow more un-interrupted time for research. As illustrated in the table below, the clinical obligations progressively decrease from the first to the third year of fellowship.

Relation to the Department of Medicine

Fellows in the Endocrinology and Metabolism training have significant interactions with residents in the Department of Medicine. Specifically, InternalMedicine residents rotate through the Outpatient Endocrinology Clinics as part of their Ambulatory Clinic rotation. In addition, residents may rotate on the Endocrinology Consultation service during their senior year. Finally, Internal Medicine residents have elective time during their senior year during which they may pursue in-depth study of a specific area within Endocrinology under the supervision of a faculty member. Endocrinology fellows also interact with Internal Medicine residents during their Endocrinology consults. In this setting, the resident and fellow interact daily in formulating the diagnostic and therapeutic plan, in writing orders and in the preparation of Medicine Grand Rounds presentations.
