Fellowship Programs - Overview

The MacLean Center provides an outstanding setting for training in medical ethics. We offer the following types of fellowship opportunities: a one-year part-time program and a two-year Master’s degree program option for outstanding fellows.

One-year, part-time fellowship

This program is designed for clinicians and academic physicians who are interested in gaining training and experience in medical ethics. The program begins with a six-week, full-time intensive introduction in July and August. During the intensive program, fellows attend 3 seminars daily, for a total of almost 90 seminars. From September to June, fellows meet one day a week for a structured ethics curriculum including Topics in Clinical Ethics, Conceptual Foundations of Health Law, Introduction to Moral Philosophy and Bioethics, and Research-in-Progress seminars. With faculty supervision, fellows participate actively in a busy ethics consultation service. Faculty mentors assist fellows as they design and carry out a research project. While most fellows are physicians, we welcome those interested in medical ethics from any perspective, including philosophy, nursing, and the social sciences. Participants in the part-time fellowship program do not receive a stipend.

We began a partnership with the United States Veterans Administration (VA) Hospital System in 2010, through which three VA medical professionals per year are selected through national search to participate in our fellowship program. This program will continue in to 2011-2012.
