Department of Medicine

The MacLean Center provides an outstanding setting for training in medical ethics. We offer the following types of fellowship opportunities: a two-year full-time Master’s Degree program and a one year part-time program.

The MacLean Center is now accepting applications for fellowship to begin July 1, 2008.

Two-year, full-time Master’s Degree fellowship
The University of Chicago invites applications for a unique two-year fellowship program. We seek primary care physicians -- general medicine, general pediatrics, family medicine or geriatrics -- who plan an academic career with a focus on health policy and clinical medical ethics. This fellowship is part of a University-wide initiative to integrate studies in clinical medicine with those in the social sciences. We provide a health services research curriculum including courses on biostatistics, epidemiology, health economics, health policy and study design. Fellows also take a structured ethics curriculum that includes Topics in Clinical Ethics, Conceptual Foundations of Health Law, Analytic Philosophy, research-in-progress seminars, as well as participating in a busy ethics consultation service. Working with mentors, each fellow will design and carry out a research project, and obtain a Master's degree. We are accepting applications for July, 2008. Stipend commensurate with experience. The application deadline is December 31, 2007.

This program is designed for clinicians who are interested in gaining training and experience in medical ethics. The program begins with a six-week, full-time intensive introduction in July and August. From September to June, fellows meet one day a week for a structured ethics curriculum including Topics in Clinical Ethics, Conceptual Foundations of Health Law, Analytic Philosophy, and research-in-progress seminars. Fellows also participate and are supervised in a busy ethics consultation service. Working with faculty mentors, each fellow will design and carry out a research project. No stipend is available for this fellowship program. The application deadline has been extended to March 1, 2008.

In 2007, we began a Surgical Ethics Fellowship. Residents, fellows and Surgical faculty are welcome to apply.
