Conference Statement
This is the seventeenth annual conference on clinical medical ethics and patient care sponsored by the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics at the University of Chicago. The Center's aim is to foster a network of clinical scholars worldwide who use clinical ethics to improve the quality of patient care and patient outcomes.
This year's Conference focuses on global bioethics, pediatric research, end of life care, and the use of empirical data to develop ethical health policies. Invited speakers include Charles Bosk, University of Pennsylvania; Jonathan F. Fanton, President of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation; Prasanna Hota, Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of India; Amy Pollack, Columbia University; and John Wennberg, Dartmouth College. We are delighted that many of the MacLean Center former fellows will be able to participate in the Conference.
Acknowledgements
This conference remembers Dorothy Jean MacLean, who helped found the Center and was deeply committed to its work. D.J. MacLean believed that education was the best way to improve the world and throughout her life supported many leading educational institutions. The MacLean Center is grateful to have had the benefit of her friendship and encouragement for many years. The Conference organizers and participants wish to acknowledge and thank D.J. MacLean’s family, especially Barry and Mary Ann MacLean, co-chairs of the Center’s Advisory Board, for their continued enthusiasm and support of the Center and for their help in making this conference possible.
This conference also remembers Irving Harris, a dear friend who was dedicated to developing effective public policy informed by ethics. Irving’s vision supported the Center’s work in public policy and encouraged the development of a new combined Master’s Degree program in Ethics and Public Policy. We would like to acknowledge Joan Harris and the Irving Harris Foundation for their long and continuing support of the Center.
We also wish to acknowledge the following individuals for their ongoing support of the MacLean Center: Lindy Bergman, Kay and Matthew Bucksbaum, Janet and Craig Duchossois, Susan and Kevin Flynn, Ann Dudley and Stan Goldblatt, Keith and Rodney Goldstein, Connie and Dennis Keller and the Keller Family Foundation, Martha and John Mabie, The Oremus Family, Carole and Gordon Segal, Brenda and Earl Shapiro, Bryan Traubert and The Pritzker-Traubert Family Foundation, and Sarita Warshawsky.
