Monica Peek,MD- Named as Bucksbaum Faculty Fellow

Monica Peek, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine (Section of General Internal Medicine) has been chosen as one of the first Bucksbaum Faculty Fellows. Dr. Peek is an outstanding clinician and health service researcher who studies the influence of race and culture on the doctor-patient relationship. Her work aims to reduce racial and cultural disparities in diabetes care and outcomes, both locally and nationally, and to improve the ways that physicians and African Americans interact and communicate. Dr. Peek brings excellent clinical and scholarly skills to her work with patients and to her teaching interactions with students.
The Bucksbaum Institute is a major new initiative of the University of Chicago that focuses on enhancing the skills of physicians to be advisers and counselors who help patients make informed decisions. Bucksbaum Faculty Fellows are selected from junior faculty who have demonstrated a deep interest in the doctor-patient relationship and are dedicated to patient care, collaborative decision-making and clinical excellence. This appointment will enable Faculty Fellows to explore approaches to improve the doctor-patient relationship and to study how this knowledge may benefit patients and the community. Faculty Fellows will also serve as mentors for the Institute’s Medical Student Scholars
