Matthew Sorrentino, MD, appointed Vice Chair for Clinical Operations

Matthew Sorrentino, MD, Professor of Medicine in the Section of Cardiology, has been appointed as Vice Chair for Clinical Operations effective immediately. In this new role, Dr. Sorrentino will assist in leading the Department of Medicine’s clinical programs and serve as the key departmental representative with the UCM and BSD on issues relating to the Department’s outpatient, inpatient and offsite practices.

Dr. Sorrentino began his career at the University of Chicago in 1980, as a student in the Pritzker School of Medicine. He continued on to become a graduate of our internal medicine residency program and our cardiology fellowship program, during which time he also served as chief medical resident. In 1991 he was appointed to the faculty as an Assistant Professor, promoted to Associate Professor in 1998, and Professor in 2009. In 2011, he was appointed the Associate Director of the Bucksbaum Institute for Clinical Excellence.

Dr. Sorrentino has held multiple clinical leadership roles within the Section of Cardiology and UCM serving as the director of the section’s clinical programs from 1994-1998, and currently as director of the Preventive Cardiology Program and the cardiology outpatient practice. Within UCM, he has served on the Sedation Policy Committee, the Clinics and ER Task Force, the PDP Task Force, and others. Within the BSD, he currently serves as a member of the Compliance Committee.

As a clinician, Dr. Sorrentino is an expert in preventive cardiology with interests in treating hyperlipidemia, hypertension and coronary artery disease. In 1999, Dr. Sorrentino was designated a specialist in hypertension by the American Society of Hypertension. He has been honored by Chicago magazine as one of the top cardiologists in the Chicago area in 2000, 2008, and 2010 through 2015 and was named by Castle Connolly as a Top Doctor in Cardiovascular Disease in 2015. In 2016, he received the Department’s Patient Satisfaction Award. Nationally, Dr. Sorrentino is an active member of the American College of Cardiology where he serves on the CardioSurve research panel. He has served the American Heart Association in various capacities, most recently as a member of the Nominating and Awards Committee. He currently serves as an editorial advisor for Health. com. He has written numerous articles on preventive cardiology, including writing and editing two books, “Hyperlipidemia in Primary Care” and “Hypertension, A Companion to Braunwald’s Heart Disease.” As an educator, Dr. Sorrentino is a two time recipient of the of the Department’s Medical Residents Teaching Award ( 2014 and 2016) and has mentored more than a dozen medical students, residents and fellows. A popular speaker, Dr. Sorrentino has been invited to give lectures and run education programs at more than 500 local, national and international meetings and hosts the ReachMD satellite radio program for medical professionals.

As Vice Chair for Clinical Operations Dr. Sorrentino will be responsible for a broad range of clinical issues including but not limited to assessing clinical productivity and provider needs across the Department, assessing ambulatory operations, developing new innovative clinical programs, facilitating the Department’s initiatives to promote greater national, regional and local recognition, participating in the planning and facilitating the execution of UCM strategic plans (e.g. Trauma Center, South Loop, Orland Park, and Cancer Hospital), provide regulatory compliance oversight and initiate programs for improved service standards such as patient satisfaction and patient safety.
